July 2023 Updates

July has come and gone, and we have some exciting updates to share!

We had two wonderful site visits this month within the BridgeUP Universe. First, we had a site visit with BridgeUP: Environment at Van Cortlandt Park in Yonkers, NY. We met with Lindsay, John, and the new CEO of SCA, Lidia, along with the summer crew! They were working on 2 projects, water clean up and trail work within the park.

Although the day was rainy, the students were still excited to be out in the park. We had great conversations surrounding the importance of environmental advocacy and education. The younger generations are faced with this climate crisis, and it is important for them to be properly educated about ways to mitigate and be proactive. By giving them actual tools they can adopt, use, and share, they are actively working towards a cleaner future. They are simultaneously picking up really special skills around interpersonal communication, project management, and  responsibility.

Our BOLD Scholars are all involved in various summer plans and activities, nurturing their various passions and hobbies. BOLD Scholar from Colby-Sawyer College, Bezawit K., is a rising junior who spend her summer working on the Nero floor of Dartmouth Hospital

This summer I am doing the 2023 LNA Summer Internship at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center where I am interning as an LNA on the 5-west/Neuro floor. By working 12-hour shifts, 3 days a week, I am gaining hands-on patient care experience as I support the Nurse and provide care alongside the care team of my patients. The leadership aspect of this internship has also provided me with opportunities where I learn from different departments in the hospital through network, shadowing options, and professional development sessions. While nursing students are not required to do an internship, I believe this summer has equipped me with valuable insight into patient care and given me the confidence to work independently

Another Colby-Sawyer BOLD Scholar, Abby W., spent a month working alongside Doctors and Nurses in Tanzania this summer. She is a rising senior who is interested in the medical field!

Thanks to the BOLD Women’s Leadership Network, I was able to fulfill my dream of working in a hospital in Africa. I traveled to Arusha, Tanzania, where I practiced my nursing skills in many departments, including pediatrics, medical-surgical, neonatal intensive care unit, and surgery. The doctors and nurses were able to teach me about the pathology of common conditions and show me new skills. A small group of doctors taught me how to take blood and exam specimens in the lab. Through this internship, I was able to grow my nursing perspective and skills and immerse myself in a new culture.
— Abby W.

We are so proud of all the impressive work taking place. Look out for August updates at the end of the month!
